Waiting for Spring: Choosing Hope, Healing, and What to Nourish

I’m waiting for spring.

The interesting thing is, I feel it before it even gets here. I’m ahead of it. I can smell it in the air already, that rich scent of fresh earth and black topsoil waking up. I can see what isn’t here yet. My garden still needs the weeds pulled, but I’m already imagining the beauty that will grow there.

There’s a gentle pounding of excitement in my chest.

Soon I’ll stroll through the garden sections of the stores, slowly wandering the aisles filled with flowering plants, tall grasses, and hopeful little bulbs. So many colors. So much possibility. I’ve been hearing more birds singing lately, and every note lifts my heart a little higher.

I am ready, ready for everything spring brings.

But what I love most isn’t the flowers. It’s the feeling.

Spring carries a quiet promise of eternal hope and peace. It reminds me that healing is not only possible, it is natural. Spring has a way of washing things clean and clear. It brings new life, new courage, and sometimes the strength to loosen our grip on sadness, anxiety, and depression, those heavy things that hurt.

Nature heals because we are part of nature.

And we deserve to feel the good things.

Even when life isn’t perfect. Especially then.

At 72, I’ve learned that life will never be without its shadows. But spring teaches me that light always returns. Growth always follows dormancy. What looks empty today may be gathering strength beneath the surface.

So as I prepare my garden, pulling weeds and turning soil, I ask myself an important question:

What will I nourish this season?

Will I keep feeding old worries?
Will I water regret?
Or will I tend to hope, gratitude, connection, and joy?

Gardens don’t grow by accident. Neither does emotional wellness.

This spring, I choose to nourish what gives life back to me, time outdoors, birdsong, small beauty, meaningful conversations, and the steady belief that life is worthwhile, no matter what.

Spring reminds me that we can begin again.

And decide what to nourish there.
