Starting the day is something we all have to do, but it doesn’t always come easy—especially during difficult times. Lately, I’ve been struggling with my weight, and I know I’m not alone in this battle. What makes it even more challenging for me is that one of my chemotherapy medications has a side effect of weight gain. It’s frustrating, and it’s easy to slip into a cycle of depression, especially when it affects your energy, sleep, and mood.
I’ve noticed that I’ve been sleeping a lot more, which can be a sign that things are out of balance. But I’m choosing to face this head-on. My plan to overcome this involves making small, consistent changes: eating differently, being more mindful of what I consume, and increasing my activity—even if it’s just 20 minutes a day. Small wins matter. These steps, while simple, can help reduce stress and minimize feelings of depression.
Keeping my mind focused on things that lift my spirit is another key part of my healing. For me, that means getting more involved in my community and church, whether it’s through volunteering or even helping out at an animal hospital. Staying connected and having a purpose brings a sense of hope and direction.
Support is powerful. Whether it’s friends, family, medical professionals, or even a furry companion—having someone there makes all the difference. My cat, Sweetie, seems to sense when my mood shifts. When I’m sad, she’ll meow and purr, offering her own kind of comfort and distraction. She makes me smile, and I’m grateful to have her by my side.
If you’re struggling, please remember this: you’re not alone. There is always someone willing to listen and care. Reach out. Take the small wins. You deserve support, healing, and hope.
