Every step we take in life teaches us something. Sometimes the lessons come from mistakes, sometimes from challenges, and sometimes from the hardest moments we never thought we’d face.
Living with mental health struggles has shown me this over and over. Each time I experience an episode, I pause and ask myself: What can I learn from this? How can I prevent this from happening again so I don’t need to be hospitalized? Trying isn’t always easy. And sometimes, despite our best efforts, hospitalization becomes part of the process. If that happens, remember this: the staff are there to help you.
You’ll be surrounded by professionals, doctors, therapists, and trained caregivers, who want you to heal. Many facilities offer group therapy, where sharing experiences can lead to meaningful connections and breakthroughs. You may even find clarity about why the episode happened. Sometimes a medication change is needed, and your team will help guide that process.
Healing also happens outside of treatment. The tools we use in everyday life can make a big difference in how we cope.
For me, those tools include:
- Reading and coloring
- Writing in my journal
- Spending time at the beach or walking in nature
- Caring for my cat
- Reaching out to friends
Your tools may look different, and that’s okay. What matters most is that you use them, even in the smallest ways. Baby steps often carry us the furthest. If you find yourself in a difficult season, remember this: you are not alone. People are rooting for you, even if you don’t see them. There is hope in connection, healing in small steps, and strength in every experience we go through.
