A New School Year, A New Set of Challenges

The start of a new school year often brings excitement and anticipation for many children, but for some, it can stir up anxiety and uncertainty. For my son Grayson, this year began with a new school environment that felt overwhelming. Transitioning to a much larger setting was a big change, and with that change came a ripple effect of anxiety.

Any disruption to Grayson’s routine can trigger anxiety, which, if left unaddressed, sometimes turns into anger. This year, he faced moments where his choices were less than ideal, but instead of focusing on the behavior alone, we dug deeper to understand the “why.” That step made all the difference, helping him work through his emotions with more clarity.

Then came an unexpected moment. His teacher, who truly meant well, shared how proud she was of him and mentioned that he would be changing schools soon. On an already difficult day, those words became a powerful trigger. It felt like the perfect storm. We took the opportunity to gently explain to his teacher how her comment, though unintentional, had affected him. She listened and understood, which opened the door for better communication moving forward.

What made me most proud, however, was Grayson himself. Despite the anxiety, he found the strength to communicate how he was feeling and kept pushing forward. He reminded me that even on the hardest days, there is always tomorrow—a fresh chance to start again without shame or judgment.

If you or someone you know is navigating a challenging back-to-school season, remember this: it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. Mental health matters, and taking time to address emotions is just as important as academics. Each day brings a new opportunity to reset, to breathe, and to begin again.
